RV battery care, straight from the Fleetwood manual

House vs chassis, the cutoff switch, and how to keep a stored coach from freezing its batteries over the winter.

A motorhome parked on a concrete pad on a frosty autumn morning with a storage bay door open.

Batteries rarely die on a trip. They die in the driveway in January while the coach is “just sitting.”

Two banks, two jobs

Your coach carries house batteries and chassis batteries. The 2019 Fleetwood Class A gas manual calls the house bank the reason the lights and most appliances work. The chassis bank runs the engine side. While you drive, the alternator charges the house bank. On shore power or the generator, the chassis bank gets a charge too.

Meet the cutoff switch

The battery cutoff on the monitor panel (the manual also calls it Aux) disconnects the house 12-volt loads. Turn the interior lights off before you flip it. If the coach suddenly goes dark, check this switch before anything else.

Storage is where batteries get hurt

The storage chapter is specific:

  • No shore power? Turn the house and chassis disconnects off.
  • On shore power? Leave both on.
  • Check battery voltage while the coach sits.

Then comes the warning worth taping inside a cabinet door: a discharged battery will freeze and be damaged. The manual doesn’t give a voltage number in those paragraphs, so we won’t make one up. Your battery maker’s sheet has it.

The storage checklist turns all of this into boxes you can tick and print.

Lithium plays by different rules

Watering is for flooded lead-acid batteries only. Lithium is sealed, so don’t care for it like a flooded cell, and don’t assume your stock converter charges at the right voltages for it. The battery’s own manual is the authority there.
