Boondocking power that lasts the whole trip

The dry-camping habits Fleetwood prints in its owner's manual, plus the battery and solar math behind them.

The first night off the grid usually goes fine. It’s the third morning, cloudy and cold, when you find out whether you planned or just hoped.

Arrive full, leave empty

The 2019 Fleetwood Class A manual has a short dry-camping list that beats most forum threads. Show up with charged batteries, a full fresh tank, a full water heater, and empty waste tanks. Each of those is hard to fix once you’re parked.

Small habits that add up

  • Run an absorption fridge on propane, and open it less.
  • Heat water about 20 minutes before you need it, then shut the heater off.
  • Drop the thermostat a little so the furnace cycles less.
  • Open windows before you reach for the roof air.

None of these come with a watt-hour promise. They just shrink the load your batteries have to carry.

How the calculator plans for a gray day

The battery bank calculator builds in a weather buffer of a day and a half of your normal load, even when the math says solar has you covered. It sizes storage to whichever is bigger: your load minus solar, or that buffer. It never goes below 1,280 Wh.

Solar in that tool is panel watts times 4 hours times 0.75, per day. The solar array calculator swaps that fixed 4 for a season you choose. For real weather, the forecast pulls a week of sunlight for your ZIP.

400W solar pack

In the battery tool's math, 400 W of panel puts back about 1,200 Wh on a decent day.

The air conditioner question

In the luxury preset, leaving the AC checked adds roughly 11,000 Wh a day. Running roof air all night from batteries is rarely realistic. If that’s the trip, bring the generator or book a hookup. The generator vs solar calculator will show what a season of that costs with your own fuel price.

Wind still matters when you’re parked

The max wind calculator gives parked and highway estimates, and it carries a big disclaimer for good reason. Keep a weather radio in the rig and turn it on when the sky changes.
